Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Peripheral Nerve Compression

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is a prevalent condition often linked to jobs that require extensive keyboard use. However, it can arise from any compression injury affecting the median nerve as it passes through the narrow carpal tunnel on the palm side of the wrist. Additionally, trauma or swelling related to pregnancy can also trigger this syndrome.

Symptoms of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome include tingling, numbness, and pain in the wrist and hand.

At 5 and 10 Wellness Center, our Registered Physiotherapists will identify the specific cause of your Carpal Tunnel Syndrome before determining the most appropriate treatment for you. Typically, effective treatment may take a few months. Our physiotherapy program aims to alleviate your pain and equip you with strategies to prevent its recurrence. We are committed to not only helping you recover but also ensuring your long-term well-being.

Scaphoid Fracture

Navicular Fracture

Scaphoid fractures are serious injuries that necessitate specialized care. Typically caused by a fall onto an outstretched arm, the scaphoid is a small bone in the wrist. When fractured, it has a higher risk of improper healing due to inadequate blood supply to the area.

Once the scaphoid has healed correctly and is properly aligned, you can begin personalized physiotherapy at 5 and 10 Wellness Center to aid your full recovery after the cast is removed.

Your treatment will concentrate on restoring full function and manual dexterity, along with strategies and techniques to protect your wrist and thumb.

Colles’ Fracture

Broken Wrist/Distal Radius Fracture

Colles’ fractures, which frequently occur in older individuals, result from falling on an outstretched arm and breaking the radius bone in the forearm. Like many fractures, this injury typically requires a cast for healing, and in some instances, metal hardware may be needed to ensure proper stabilization of the bone.

Once your cast is removed, one of our Registered Physiotherapists at 5 and 10 Wellness Center will focus on improving your mobility and strength, diligently working with you to achieve measurable progress at each appointment until you reach full recovery. Your treatment plan will include specific exercises aimed at enhancing both your movement and strength. After the fracture stabilizes, the guidance of an experienced physical therapist is essential for regaining your previous levels of mobility and activity.

De Quervain’s Tenosynovitis

Trapped Tendons

Often misdiagnosed as Carpal Tunnel Syndrome if not thoroughly evaluated, De Quervain’s Tenosynovitis involves inflammation of the tendons in the wrist and forearm near the base of the thumb. This condition is typically triggered by repetitive thumb motions over time, with activities such as grasping, squeezing, or pinching being common contributing factors. To ensure you receive the appropriate treatment, it’s essential to consult a Registered Physiotherapist who has the expertise to identify the signs and symptoms accurately.

After identifying the factors that have led to your condition, we will develop a personalized treatment plan at 5 and 10 Wellness Center, which may include applying a splint to protect the affected area and teaching you joint protection techniques to prevent further issues or recurrences. Our primary goal is to facilitate the best possible physical recovery and ensure a pain-free return to your daily activities.

Stenosing Tenosynovitis

Trigger Thumb and Trigger Finger

f your finger clicks or gets stuck while bending, you may have Trigger Finger or Trigger Thumb. This issue often arises from a thickened tendon forming a nodule that catches during movement. Known as Stenosing Tenosynovitis, this condition is relatively easy to diagnose and typically shows a good recovery rate if treated within the first three months. Acting quickly can help prevent the injury from worsening and make it easier to manage, increasing your chances of a full recovery. Physiotherapy often eliminates the need for surgery in most cases.

At 5 and 10 Wellness Center, our Registered Physiotherapists are highly skilled in conducting thorough assessments and developing individualized treatment plans. Since Trigger Finger can be a persistent issue, your treatment program might include a combination of exercises, manual therapy, education about the condition, and recommendations for splinting to minimize movement and irritation that can cause additional rubbing of the nodule.

Mallet Finger

Hammer/Baseball Finger

If your finger gets stuck in a bent position at its second joint, you might be experiencing Mallet Finger. This condition occurs when the extensor tendon in your finger is torn, preventing full extension.

After conducting a comprehensive assessment at 5 and 10 Wellness Center to rule out any underlying conditions that could have led to ligament weakness, our Registered Physiotherapists will create a tailored treatment plan to address the issue.

Your therapy program may include splinting and rest, as well as treatments aimed at reducing swelling and minimizing scarring. Our physiotherapy team will also identify and address any lifestyle factors that could be worsening your condition, ensuring the best possible recovery. Prompt intervention is crucial to prevent further complications and the potential need for surgery.

Stenosing Tenosynovitis

Degenerative Joint Disease

Arthritis of the hand is primarily associated with aging and can be quite painful, with each patient experiencing it differently. Various causes and degrees of discomfort can arise, affecting different areas of the hand. The condition develops when the normally smooth articular cartilage between the bones becomes rough, making it harder for bones to move smoothly against one another. Since arthritis can evolve over time, it’s essential to regularly monitor and reassess your symptoms. At 5 and 10 Wellness Center, we offer customized treatment programs tailored to your unique experience and changing needs.

If left untreated, arthritis can lead to several deformities, including ulnar drift, boutonniere deformity, and swan neck deformity. Our arthritis treatment plans focus on preventing these deformities, alleviating pain, and quickly addressing flare-ups. After managing the acute phase, our approach will emphasize strengthening the hand and improving or maintaining its function and flexibility.
